Day 8 (April 20, 2022, Wednesday)

30 degrees waking up. Ken’s quote of the day:

“Every day we stumble, sometimes we fall and we pick ourselves up and some hills are bigger than others”.

Our lunch and breakfast food rations for the next three days are: one oatmeal one carnation drink,10 slices of pepperoni and one cheese stick each, with a mini Heath bar for dessert. We split a GU and had an Oreo cookie for mid-afternoon sustenance – and one 2.6 oz of meat with Kens mac and cheese and Lisa’s ramen.

We saw two snakes copulating, one deer ran away, we followed hog tracks all day long and we heard an owl. Ken saw a squirrel and we took pictures of lots of flowers (can you name them?)  and there were no people all day until we saw Rangers at the end of the day with their boat and their four wheeler and four coolers full of food!

“We did not talk to the rangers or ask for food (even though we could starve out here) because we lost our official papers. We didn’t want to get kicked out of the forest because our papers are somewhere but not in our packs.”

It was cool in the first half of the day and hot in the afternoon- Lisa changed completely into her dress and her little toe got a blister.

Ken set up camp (again) and Lisa did the dishes. Ken created modern art fire.

“There was beautiful fire art by Ken and layers of depth to the fire sculpture. A whole new level of cooking wood! We saw fireflies just before going to sleep. The fire was hungry and hot!”
